On 28 June, the National Computer Institute (NCI), one of two UN-APCICT/ESCAP partners in the Philippines, conducted a series of technology talks entitled “Empowering the Youth Through ICT” for 200 secondary and university students.  The event coincided with the Philippines National ICT Month; an annual celebration designed to raise awareness about the importance and potential of information and communication technology.

The series of “tech talks” organized by NCI covered topics ranging from blogging as a learning tool to using ICT for green growth and climate change abatement.   One “tech talk” was delivered by former UN-APCICT/ESCAP intern, Marvin Zamora, who discussed his experience with UN-APCICT/ESCAP and how it shaped the way he views ICT as a tool for development in the Philippines and the region.

The day-long event also included a real-time poster making contest centered on the theme, “ICT: Enabling the Dreams of Youth”. Twelve students representing 9 high schools and 3 universities participated in the competition. All 12 posters were put on display at NCI to highlight the role of ICT in empowering the youth of the Philippines.

As an official sponsor of the event, UN-APCICT/ESCAP provided learning resources for all the students that attended the event. UN-APCICT/ESCAP and NCI have been partnering to enhance ICTD human resource capacity in the Philippines since March, 2011.
