Colombo, Sri Lanka - 22 Mar 2012

Over 140 government officials, academics and development stakeholders in Sri Lanka participate in launch of ICT for youth capacity building programme.

On 20 March, APCICT and the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) of Sri Lanka launched APCICT’s Primer Series on ICT for Development (ICTD) for Youth (Primer Series). The opening ceremony was held in Colombo, with the presence and active engagement of senior-level officials from the MoHE, Ministry of IT and Telecommunication and Ministry of Public Administration,of Sri Lanka, as well as Vice Chancellors from 15 universities

On 21-22 March, APCICT and MoHE organized a two-day training on ICTD curricula for educators from across the country. Over 60 university academics and government officials from all universities received training on Primer Series. The workshop was delivered by Primer Series author, Dr. Usha Reddi.

The Primer Series, part of APCICT's flagship initiative, the ‘Turning Today’s Youth into Tomorrow’s Leaders Programme’, provides key ICTD content to educators to help fill the gap in ICTD coverage in university programmes and majors. APCICT and MoHE are working closely to implement the Primer Series into university curricula for the start of the new academic year in September, 2012.

"Enhancing the ICT capacities of our next generation of leaders is an investment that will support Sri Lanka's poverty reduction and development goals," said Mr. Lalith Weerathunga, Secretary to the President of the Government of Sri Lanka.
