Local Governments, being the first respondents and the ones responsible for community development, have a critical role to play in managing disaster risks, protecting their citizens, and achieving community resilience. Recognizing the important role of the local government in disaster risk management, APCICT/ESCAP is developing an Academy Module on “ICT for Disaster Risk Management for Local Government”, aiming to equip local government officials with the essential knowledge and skills to understand the overall framework of disaster risk management and the practical use of ICTs in disaster mitigation and prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

In collaboration with CityNet, APCICT/ESCAP organized a Virtual Consultation meeting on ICT for Disaster Risk Management for Local Government, held on 3 February 2021 with the aim to engage stakeholders to contribute to the module’s thematic areas by reviewing emerging issues and assessing the current capacity developing needs. The meeting brought together local government officials responsible for disaster risk reduction and urban planning from different countries across the Asia and Pacific region.
