On 14-17 April 2015, the Government of the Kingdom of Bhutan and UN-APCICT/ESCAP are co-organizing the Capacity Building Programme on Social Media for Development and Governance. The programmeis being undertaken in cooperation with the country’s Ministry of Information and Communications.
The activity marks an important step in deepening the understanding of country’s government leaders and policymakers on the potential of social media for sustainable socio-economic development and good governance.
Over the four days, the programme consists of three activities targeted to different government audiences: 1) High-Level Briefing on Social Media for Development for Bhutan’s national leadership, including the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers, Chairperson of the National Council and Speaker of the National Assembly; 2) Executive Seminar on Social Media for Development for Secretaries, Commissioners, Director-Generals, and Directors; and 3) Workshop on Social Media for Development forInformation and Media Officers.
The programme also introduces to participants not only the productive uses of social media and their applications in socio-economic development, but also the associated challenges and potential drawbacks in their use. In this regard, the programme underscores the importance of social media policy, and provides a platform for dialogue among the country’s government leaders and public officials on the draft social media policy of Bhutan.
