On 16 February, the United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT) will organize an Online Expert Group Meeting on Social Media for Development.
The meeting will bring together 9 experts and practitioners in the areas of ICT for development, social media and disaster risk management to review and enhance APCICT’s latest capacity development resource - Primer Series 5 on Social Media for Development – which is targeted to universities and institutions of higher learning in Asia and the Pacific.
Primer Series 5 on Social Media for Development introduces the concept of social media and their applications in development. Through this series, students and youth are expected to have a deeper understanding of the implications of social media in society, their potential contributions to economic growth, political development and sustainable development, and the importance of promoting their positive and productive uses.
Launched in February 2012 as part of UN APCICT’s ‘Turning Today’s Youth into Tomorrow’s Leaders’ programme to promote ICTD education in higher learning institutions for students of all disciplines, the Primer Series on ICTD for Youth has been rolled-out and are being utilized in 14 countries, reaching over 16,000 participants/students across the region. Currently, the Primer Series is comprised of 4 issues on different ICTD topics and is available in 6 languages.
