APCICT partners with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) to organize a training workshop on ICT in Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in Port-of-Spain, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on 17-18 September 2013. This marked yet another important step in taking APCICT’s flagship training programme for government officials beyond Asia and the Pacific region.

The workshop delivered training on Module 9 of the ‘Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders’. It provided participants with an overview of Disaster Risk Management(DRM) focusing on matching ICT with identified DRM information needs in the context of the Caribbean. It also examined existing ICT applications, benefits as well as barriers in utilizing ICT in DRM.  Attended by 15 government officials from Caribbean countries, the workshop is expected to help build capacities of participating government officials to improve Disaster Risk Management using ICT at national and sub-regional levels in the Caribbean.

During the group discussion towards the end of the workshop, the participants had an opportunity to discuss customization at the country level for introducing the modules in their respective countries and put together recommended strategies on the way forward.

The ‘Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders’ is a flagship initiative of APCICT which aims to equip government officials with necessary knowledge to leverage ICT for achieving national development goals. It has been rolled-out in 27 countries in Asia and the Pacific region, and it is available in 12 languages.
