On 3-5 February 2014, APCICT co-organized a workshop on ICT for Disaster Risk Management with the Career Executive Service Board (CESB) of the Philippines. The workshop brought together over 25 civil servants, local officials and representatives of non-governmental organizations involved in disaster risk management in order to address the urgent needs of improving the capacity of the Philippines to more effectively respond to disaster situations and of enhancing its disaster risk reduction efforts.

The three-day workshop, based on the contents of APCICT’s flagship programme ‘Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders’ (Academy) Module 9 ICT for Disaster Risk Management, shared knowledge and experiences of the Philippine government in disaster risk management based on the recent earthquake in Bohol and the typhoon Haiyan. Participants discussed issues related to preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery and offered recommendations for enhanced resilience to natural disasters.

Since its launch in 2008, the Academy programme has been adopted and rolled-out in 27 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Its comprehensive 11-module curriculum has been helping government officials and policymakers in their capacity-building efforts by providing knowledge and skills on how to leverage ICT for national and regional socio-economic development. Currently, Academy modules are available in 12 languages, with plans for more translations underway.
