This month APCICT will welcome university students from numerous countries and sponsor an ICT ministerial meeting in Tonga.

APCICT Kicks-off Annual Programme for ASEAN Students

On 20 June, the Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT/ESCAP), a regional institute of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, will kick-off the ASEAN ICTD Student Ambassadors programme in Incheon, Republic of Korea. In partnership with Korea’s Daejon University, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea, and the ASEAN University Network, APCICT will host nine students from ASEAN countries for 2 months. The ICTD Student Ambassadors will be provided with opportunities to engage in APCICT’s research and capacity building initiatives. Over 25 ASEAN students have participated in the Ambassadors programme since its inception in 2008. The programme is a part of APCICT’s larger Future ICT Leaders Programme, which aims to increase the ICT for Development (ICTD) capacity of the next generation of leaders through exposure to ICT projects and greater access to ICTD course content at the undergraduate and graduate level.  

In addition to the ASEAN Students, APCICT will welcome two graduate students from the United States to assist APCICT in developing and delivering its programmes as a part of the United Nations internship programme. APCICT will also host three undergraduate students, from the United States and Singapore, participating in an exchange program with Korea University.

 

APCICT Sponsors ICT Ministerial Meeting in the Pacific.

The Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT), a regional institute of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, will sponsor the Pacific ICT Officials and Ministers meeting to be held 16-18 June, in Tonga. In addition to sponsoring the event, a presentation will be made detailing APCICT’s mission and particular work to strengthen ICT human resource and institutional capacity in Pacific Island countries in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).  The presentation will by delivered by APCICT’s “Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders” (Academy) partner and resource person, Siaosi Sovaleni – ICT Outreach Coordinator from SPC.

APCICT will also take the opportunity to distribute its newly published Briefing Notes and Case Study Series to the Pacific Island delegates attending the ICT Officials and Ministers meeting in Tonga.

Delegates of the ICT Officials and Ministers meeting will discuss and review the Pacific Plan digital strategy and the revised ICT framework for the region. Since its inception, APCICT has prioritized the Pacific Island countries; rolling-out the Academy in five Pacific Island countries and conducting three e-Government Workshops in Incheon, Korea for the Pacific Islands Forum.
