In early March the Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT) launched four new courses on its distance learning platform, the APCICT Virtual Academy. The courses cover three issues of the Primer Series on ICTD for Youth and the newest module of the Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders.

The Primer Series issues include the Primer Series 2 on Project Management and ICTD; Primer Series 3 on ICT for Disaster Risk Management; and the Primer Series 4 on ICT, Climate and Green Growth. The newest module of Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders covers the topic of Social Media for Development.

Combining video lectures with interactive presentations, the new courses provide content in a format that is more appealing to today’s youth. The online modules also enable anyone interested in ICT for development to take the courses anytime, anywhere, thereby expanding access to APCICT’s training programmes to people who might not be able to participate in these courses otherwise.

APCICT Virtual Academy is the online distance learning platform for APCICT’s ICTD capacity building flagship programmes, the Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders, Primer Series on ICTD for Youth and Knowledge Sharing Series. Launched in June 2009, the Virtual Academy has been developed as part of APCICT's efforts to diversify delivery channels in order to maximize access to the course materials and to encourage continuous learning. As of February 2014, 7,479 users from 149 countries have enrolled in APCICT’s Virtual Academy.
