This guide points out how firms and customer organizations manage their Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) when using ICTs to share technical data in the context of research and development, and production collaboration. It investigates how, and under what conditions, IPR issues affect the development of 'shared digital environments' among large supply networks. It also recommends practices and policies to improve IPR management in such contexts. The focus is on the defence industries, as they provide a leading example of an area where the complexity and cost of product design, manufacture and support are increasingly leading firms and their customers to rely on information networks to collaborate and share data.
